THE PUBLIC SPHERE JOURNAL
The concept of the ‘Public Sphere’ lies at the core of every discussion regarding the roles of the market and the state in modern society. It arises from the need for an institutional space that allows free individuals to engage in vibrant debate about the nature of institutions and democracy, the reasons for discontent within civil society, and future opportunities for welfare enhancing reforms. Taking the name of this ‘discursive space’, conceived by Habermas, this journal aims to provide its contributors and readers a an active space to rethinking and critically analyse today’s policy problems, aims and methods of public policy making.
With this ideal in mind, this student led and managed journal founded by students of the Class of 2013 seeks to provide an analytical coverage of current public policy debates, challenges and solutions and encourage a free exchange of ideas and arguments from diverse backgrounds and academic stances. Graduate students are thus provided with a peer-review platform that encompasses main areas of public administration that also correspond to the streams within LSE’s MPA program: development, management, social and economic policy, and regional policy. The approach that the LSE Institute of Public Affairs takes on real-world policy debates is reflected in the journal’s interdisciplinary view, that aims to contribute to the assessment of today’s public decision making.
